Detailed explanation and advise given below
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I carefully went through your query and here is my advise.
Because you are having fever with the cough and diarrhea very likely you are having an infection. Most of the time these are viral infections and rarely bacterial or fungal.
Because your fever has settled this is a reassuring thing so I would say it might be worth to try the following for a couple of days:
- try to avoid mixtures of medications for sinus or cough (those that have acetaminophen with antihistamine and pseudoephedrine) this is because they have drowsiness as a common side effect and may make you feel very fatigued
- you can use tylenol and motrin for pain as needed (after food to protect your stomach)
- if you have secretions with the cough please do not use robitussin, as it is a cough suppressant and mostly indicated for dry cough. If you have secretions it may prevent your natural reflexes of clearing the secretions and may favor pneumonia (lung infection)
- if you have secretions with the cough please take mucolytics like bisolvon or acetylcysteine or guafenesin (this works the best) to help clear the lungs from the secretions.
- any cough with blood or green secretions needs to be paid attention and medical help should be required to rule out pneumonia.
- make sure you do rest as needed and drink and eat in frequent small amounts to keep up with your needs for food and water daily.
- you may take some oral rehydration solutions in the pharmacy to substitute water and electrolytes you loose with diarrhea (these might contribute to fatigue as well)
- If you do not notice any improvement with these in the next couple of days or you have any worsening please see your doctor as soon as possible to have a check of your lungs and possible order a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia. In this case antibiotics and good follow up are needed because pneumonia can be a serious infection, especially in the elderly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
