I Started Having A Cold More Than 7 Weeks Ago

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Mar 2020
Question: I started having a cold more than 7 weeks ago with sneezing and then it turned into a cough with a blocked ear and ringing from it. The blocked ear improved about a month ago but I still get ringing and a sense of fullness from it which I have now had for about 7 weeks. I saw the ear, nose and throat doctor a week ago who checked it and confirmed that there was no longer any fluid in the ear but the Eustachian tube was still blocked. He prescribed a nasal spray, nose drops and courtesone tablets for 3 days to clear it more than two weeks ago. How long does it normally take in these circumstances for the ringing in the ear to subside?

Detailed Answer:
Hii. As you are suffering from allergic rhinitis there is inflammation of the nose. The nasal mucosa becomes congested due to inflammation. Eustachian tube is the connection between ear and nose. It helps in maintaining pressure between ear and outside atmosphere. Due to allergic rhinitis the eustachian tube get congested and it fails to open and maintain pressure between ear and atmosphere. This can result in fluid accumulation in the middle part of ear and ringing sensation of ear. When the allergic rhinitis get resolved the fluid in the middle ear get absorbed but sometimes eustachian tube fails to function properly. So the ringing sensation still persists. You continue nasal fluticasone or saline nasal spray. Take steam inhalation through nose. It can take as long as 2-3 months to get resolved. Chew chewing gum and blow balloon to facilitate eustachian tube opening. Do a hearing test and make sure that you have normal hearing as sometimes allergic rhinitis can affect the hearing also. Don't worry about ringing sensation. Relax and lead a stress free life. Don't pay heed to the sound. It will decrease by its own. Continue the spray, do a hearing test and review if you have any queries.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I was concerned because I hadn't seen any improvement in the ringing sensation and fullness in the ear for about 7 weeks. The ringing is particularly noticeable when I move my jaw up and down such as while eating or gringing my teeth. Does it really take so long for the Eustachian tube to work properly again? My hearing appears normal as I do not have any problems hearing people speak.

On chewing the eustachian tube gets opened and closed and as a result, the squeaky sound appears.

It's all related with eustachian tube opening. Its not a ear problem.

So you don't need to worry. It is due to a patulous eustachian tube opening. Please follow the advice and continue spray and steam inhalation.

Brief Answer:
Hii. Eustachian tube generally remain closed at rest and on chewing or swal

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Eustachian tube generally remain closed at rest and on chewing or swallowing it gets opened. Patulous eustachian tube is the eustachian tube which remains opened at rest and fails close. In patients having patulous eustachian tube patient has autophony, can hear the inner self generated sounds which is not audible in normal patients. So you have eustachian tube dysfu or patulous eustachian tube. The treatment is do valsalva manouvre, chew chewing gum, blow balloon, nasal breathing exercise, steam inhalation and nasal spray. Gingo biloba increase blood supply and can be helpful in tinnitus in sensorineural hearing loss. In hearing loss due to nerve weakness it may increase blood supply and can help in improvement, but the results are doubtful. Bug it won't help in eustachian tube disorders.

I try to ignore the sound but the fullness in the ear particularly bothers me when I am in a quiet room as well as the squeeky sound when I am chewing on something. When I saw the ENT doctor he seemed to think it would all clear up quickly perhaps even within a couple of weeks with the medication so it made me more anxious when I finished taking the medication such as cotisone and actifed with the symptoms not improved. He then recommended having a scan on the jaw although there is no pain or discomfort from my jaw or teeth.

No role of scan here in your ear fullness.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

No role of scan here in your ear fullness.

The ear fullness is due to eustachian tube dysfunction as well as the sound is also. Although you take steroids and antiallergic medication for a long time it always takes some time to recover.

So, time is a factor. It will take more time for the proper functioning of the eustachian tube. Till then do the Valsalva maneuver, steam inhalation, nasal spray.

I understand.
However, I went to see my ENT doctor today and requested a hearing test which I attach and would appreciate your comments very much.
She also inspected my ear and said it now looked normal apart from a few deposits left in the ear from the antibiotic ear drops I took over a month ago.
She also prescribed betahistine oral tablets which I should twice daily for a month. She also recommended that I should have physiotherapy on my jaw as she thinks it could be causing the squeeky noise when I open and close my mouth particularly while I am chewing food. Finally, she said I could have my ear tested for the pressure as I often have fullness and pressure in the ear. I would appreciate your comments. Many thanks.

I attached the hearing test previously and would appreciate your comments. Does it show up as normal? The doctor told me that the x ray in respect of the jaw was fine. It is particularly the fullness/pressure of the ear that bothers me since I have now had it just over 2 months.

I went back to see the ENT doctor a few days ago who inspected my ear and said there was still mucus causing the blockage and producing the ringing noise/fullness in the ear. He also mentioned that the septum in the nose was disjointed towards the left but I forgot to ask him what that means. He then suggested that I should take a short course of solupred for 5 days and continue using the nasal spray which I have now completed the course but I still notice this squeeky noise when moving my jaw up and down particularly when chewing food. Please advise if possible. Many thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. The hearing is normal. There may be eustachian tube dysfunction which I mentioned previously. The nasal septum is deviated to left which is very common in normal individuals. There is nothing to worry about it. The squeeky noise during opening closing mouth may be due to eustachian tube dysfunction or due to sounds produced by temporomandibular joint. Both of these are normal and need to specific treatment. You can continue saline nasal spray along with flutucasone spray. Take steam inhalation.

I went to see the ENT doctor again a few days ago who confirmed that the ear was clear but there was still mucus behind the ear drum and the nasal septum was disjointed. He also prescribed Aturgyl nasal spray for a further 10 days but didn't recommend prescribing prednisone as I had taken it recently for 5 days. He said that I need to be patient but I am just a little concerned there has been very improvement in the high pitched squeeky noise and fullness in the ear which I have had for almost 3 months. Does it really take such a long time to clear?

I Started Having A Cold More Than 7 Weeks Ago

I started having a cold more than 7 weeks ago with sneezing and then it turned into a cough with a blocked ear and ringing from it.
