I Started Having A Cold More Than Three Weeks Ago
Question: I started having a cold more than three weeks ago which developed from sneezing into a bad cough and now has subsequently cleared up. I also had a blocked ear for more than three weeks but it is now much improved. However, I often hear a ringing noise from it. I saw the doctor a couple of days ago who inspected my ear and said that everything appeared clear now and there was no longer any blockage. Why am I still receiving a ringing noise from my ear and how long does it take to clear up please?
Many thanks
Paul

Brief Answer:
You may need 5 more days to feel better.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
I think the main cause of the ringing in your ear may be congestion and inflammation.
Your ear may feel better now but still inflammation may continue.
I believe you may need some more days to improve ringing in your ears.
Taking decongestants such pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine may be helpful. Citerizine and other antihistamines may help relieve congestion.
If it still doesn't go away you may need to do a total blood count with formula and monitoring blood pressure.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

If it doesn't go away soon, what else could be done to resolve it? What would a total blood count with formula and monitoring blood pressure show up?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Anemia and high blood pressure also cause ringing in ears.
Detailed Answer:
If it doesn't go fast you can help it taking antihistamines such benadryl or citerizine and decongestants such pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine.
Sometimes iron deficiency anemia and increased blood pressure can cause ringing in ears that's why I told you to do a total blood count and measure blood pressure.

Thank you for explaining. I will take your advice but is it normal for it to linger on so long for more than three weeks?
Brief Answer:
It can last for 3 weeks or longer.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
Congestion can last for 3 weeks or more.
The inflammation of the sinuses can last ever longer.
You may need more time for congestion to go away and mucosal lining to regenerate.
