I Tested Positive For Trichomonas, Doctor Prescribed Me A Metronidazole

Question: I tested positive for trichomonas, doctor prescribed me a metronidazole topical lotion.. this is effective? Shouldn’t I be using oral metronidazole?
Brief Answer:
Oral metronidazole is preferred
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. While topical metronidazole can be used to treat trichomonas, oral metronidazole has a higher cure rate, and is the preferred treatment for trichomonas. Even in pregnant or breastfeeding women, while topical metronidazole might be given to limit systemic absorption, oral metronidazole has still been found to be safe and more effective, and would still be the preferred treatment.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
