I Think I Might Have Allergies. My Sense Of Smell

Posted on Sat, 11 May 2019
Question: I think I might have allergies. My sense of smell is pretty terrible and I wake up with mucus in my throat all the time. However when I take allergy medicine it doesn’t make me feel any better. I stop taking it after a couple of days because I feel like it’s not helping. I take Zyrtec and Flonase and also do neilmed sinus rinse. Also, is Dymista better than Zyrtec and Flonase? Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Its seems that you are having allergic rhinosinusitis which is the inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses. As you are having thick mucus in the morning then it is the mucus coming from the paranasal sinuses. Now the plan of management is to see structures of the nose and whether there is any polyps present inside the nose. This can only be done by nasal endoscopy by an ENT surgeon. Do a X ray paranasal sinuses also. You can start fluticasone nasal spray, antiallergic tablet levocetrizine. You have to continue spray for atleast 3 months. Take steam inhalation after spray. Stay away from dust, cold, insects, household smoke. Change bedsheets mattress thrice weekly. Try to have a bath after coming from work. Do yoga and nasal breathing exercises. All these measures will decrease your allergies but allergy can be eradicated completely. So mainstay of treatment is to increase immunity. This can be done by having a stress free life, yoga and good protein diet. Consult an ENT surgeon for further management and to do the endoscopy. Please review with reports and I'd you have any queries.
