I think a spider went up my right nostril yesterday morning. I'm very worried and frightened. Since then my nose has been blocked and sore
Brief Answer:
I do not think you need to worry about this- details below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query.
I understand your fear when considering that a spider may be in your nose. I am wondering which is the reason you think a spider may have entered in your nose? Did you actually see this happen?
On the other hand, nasal space is not an environment where a spider would be able to live, so even if a spider entered there, I do not think it is alive. The fact that you had a check of the nasal cavity with a doctor and nothing was identified there, this is very reassuring as well.
There is no direct communication between the nasal cavity and the brain or other important structures, so you do not need to worry.
Because your nose feels blocked, I would advise you to do nasal lavage with saline solution 0.9% 2-3 times a day. This will help flush any secretions or obstacles in the nasal cavity and provide relief (be watchful not to traumatize the nasal septum- flush towards the sides of the nasal cavity).
Nasal steroids such as fluticasone spray 1-2 times a day would be helpful to reduce inflammation and bring relief as well.
Normally with this treatment, you should feel much better in 3-4 days (the blockage and soreness).
If you are not better in 5-6 days or you notice any worsening, please have another check with your doctor.
I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

I went to accident and emergency and all they did was look up my nostril with a torch. They said that they couldn't see anything there but there was a bit of blood. Now I can't get over the fact that there may be something crawling around inside me

Hello and welcome back,
I am sorry for the late reply.
I understand your anxiety. on the other hand, if the doctor checked in your nose and did not see anything worrisome it is unlikely there is something there.Furthermore, be reassured that the nose contains secretions that are thick and would not allow inects to crawl or move around.
Try to get the treatment I suggested above for 3-4 weeks. This will help clean the nose and reduce any swelling, so if you repeat the examination it will be a better view for the doctor.Be watchful not to hurt the septum of the nose (flush towards the sides of the nose).
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

It's been two days now and my nose still feels weird and blocked. I'm always worried it may have crawled down or up and laying eggs or getting bigger

I am absolutely terrified. The thought that it may still be alive inside me doing anything. I've been trying to blow my nose and sneeze to see if anything will come out but my nose is so blocked that nothing is coming out. And it feels uncomfortable. And no one is helping me. I've also been trying to make myself vomit incase it went down

Thank you. I'll try that treatment. That should help my nose which is so blocked but what about the spider or insect if it's still alive?. What can I about that?

Brief Answer:
You should not worry, it is not natural for some insects to survive in the nose
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,
Insects do not normally live inside the nose, the secretions are thick and would not allow their movement around. Having the nasal lavage will help flush anything in the way and also the steroid will reduce the inflammation, thus relieving the nose.
I hope this answers your query.

Yes I'm very grateful to you as the hospital didn't say anything. Just left me with it still alive inside me or even dead. Laying eggs or getting bigger. It's terrifying

Brief Answer:
The nasal cavity is not an environment that something like this will move around or lay eggs
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,
I understand it is frightening to think something may be in your nose. On the other hand, I do not believe it is moving in you or laying eggs. The nose is not a natural environment for insects to live and the thick nasal secretions will not allow their mobility or for them to stay alive.
I would like you to be reassured that such a thing is impossible medically.
I hope this answers your query.

Could it have gone down to my stomach or up?

Could it have gone down to my stomach or up?
Brief Answer:
Detailed answer below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,
Many foreign bodies (insects included) that may enter our nose may end up in the stomach. The fluids in the stomach are there to digest, so the PH there is very acid and there is no living thing that would be able to make it in there. So, even if there was an insect that entered the stomach there is no chance it may survive there.
I would advise you to try to relax, very likely you are having rhinitis and you should be fine with the treatment mentioned.
I hope this answers your query.
