I Want To Ask Roughly What Age I Am Going
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: I want to ask roughly what age I am going to start developing male pattern hair loss. I am a 28 y.o. Asian male. Right now I don't have any sign of hair loss. My father has a full head of hair at 56 y.o. My mother started noticeably losing hair recently, her scalp is now more visible, and her hairline hair seems much thinner, she is 55 y.o. Before she always had a lot of hair. My maternal grandfather also started losing hair around the same age as my mother, starting with hairline and crown. No one in our extended family is bald before middle age. Not sure if this is related, but I have significantly more body hair than my parents, I even have chest hair (which my parents do not, and is very uncommon for asians). And sometimes I have itchy scalp.
Brief Answer:
Around 40 years of age
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to ask a doctor service
I have gone through your query.
Usually the age of onset of male pattern baldness is around 40 years.
Since there is history of late onset of hair loss in your family it is likely that you will also start with male pattern baldness after 40 years of age.

Thanks for reply. Just a follow up question: How come my onset will be 10 years earlier than other members of my family? My mother and maternal grandfather only experienced it after 50s. Also is my excessive body hair related to balding in any way?
Brief Answer:
Welcome
Detailed Answer:
In males the age of onset is earlier than in females.
Females usually have a late onset of hair loss.
Excessive body hair is not related to scalp hair.
Scalp hair have different receptors which are under hormonal control.

And just 2 final questions: 1) is it possible that i inherit my father's genes and not experience hair loss? 2) It it likely that I experience hair loss earlier than my other family members? Or is it usually around the same age?
Brief Answer:
Its possible that you don’t experience hair loss like your father
Detailed Answer:
Yes it is possible that you don’t experience hair loss just like your father.
In current scenario we are seeing a lot of persons having early age of onset of male pattern baldness as compared to their older family members.
But it is unpredictable to say who will experience early hair loss.
