Question: I was prescribed Ciprodex for swimmers ear. I have been using the drops twice a day for almost a week, and my ear is still blocked. Have contacted Doctors office, but have not heard back from them. Does not seem like the drops are working. How long does it take for blocked feeling to clear up? If my ear is still blocked does it mean the dros are not working? I am very frustrated at this point.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Swimmers ear is due to inflammation of the external canal wall. It doesn't settle in 1 week time with ciprodex drop. It will take another 1-2 week to settle it. But if you are feeling blocking sensation in the ear, revisit your ent surgeon. Make sure your ear drum and the middle part of ear are all fine and there is no inflammation inside. You can take an antibiotic after consulting your ent surgeon to decrease the canal wall inflammation. You can start anti allergic tablet. Please also make sure your canal wall isn't swollen from inside. In that case your ent surgeon may put wick within the ear. If everything is fine and still you felt blocking sensation then do a hearing test and tympanogram and review.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Ciprodex ear drop will resolve most of the infection. But sometimes the infection may be well enough to occlude the external ear that you need to start oral antibiotic and ear wick. Don't need to worry. Just keep patience and follow advice given by your doctor. You will get well soon.

I have a follow up tomorrow with my ENT. Iwent to him last Wednesday because ear kept blocking and unblocking, amd then ear was just blocked and still is. He said it was Swimmers Ear and prescribed the Ciprodex drops. Will the drops not help with Swimmers Ear? Can Swimmers Ear cause your ear to feel blocked?
