I Was Recently Told That Worker In A Supermarket Where
Question: I was recently told that worker in a supermarket where I purchase food had hepatitis A. They are recommending the Hep a vaccine, Here our my questions. They say it must be given within the 2 weeks....it is now 22 days since the exposure. Should I still get it. Also, I had my spleen removed over 40 years ago due to a MVA...should I get the vaccine or the IG. No one at the health dept can answer these questions. Also, I need to know if there is any soy or milk in the vaccine due to my allergies. I would appreciate any your answers asap. Thank yo so very much.

First for evaluating specific diagnosis you should do a blood test called HAV-specific Immunoglobulin G (IgM) .
The guidelines recommends that older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic liver disease,splenectomy or another chronic medical condition receive an initial dose of the vaccine and a dose of immunoglobulin (IG) antibodies within two weeks in cases of suspect contamination as it is your case.
Even if you are almost three weeks now i recommend you to do it even now because it protect you , however it would be better for you to discuss with your doctor before.
Hepatitis A vaccine contains components derived from human blood or plasma and no risks of allergies from food components.

Does the Hep A vaccine need to be given with the IG. Or can I get the IG later? Please advise and thank you responding so promptly!

No , you can take now the vaccine one dosage and after the IgG but not both in the same time.
My advice for you is to get vaccine now given the fact that you are without spleen .It helps you more acurately.
