Question: i was told by friends this is a staff infection and to go to the dr right away. however, the person i live with says its not MRSA since there's no red lines. the membrane (i guess you call it) has not fully come out yet. this started almost a week ago. are there home remedies to treat this? we have been using a medicated tape to try to sweat it out. any suggestions? the black center is concerning only to me apparently and not the person i live with. he thinks another day and it might be ready to "pop out".

Detailed Answer:
Hi Good day ..Welcome to "Ask A Doctor" service. Thanks fro using the app .I have read your question and here is my advice.
Yes this looks like a corbuncle which is a skin infection caused mostly by staph aureus .This is a common probelm occurring in helthy people.( though more common in diabetic or immunocompromised people) .Infact Staph may be a common skin carrier in many people ( lives on skin without harming ) but with scratch or skin damage some how get it deep into skin to cause ifection of the hair follicle what we call corbuncle. ( boil in common language )
Mostly this is not a serious condition and may heal with self care that is warm compression and some topical antibiotics and bandaging .And letting any pus to drain .
very uncommonly this may be a bit serious to cause high grade fever pr re sickness by spreading to the blood.

This may be contagious ( spread to others ) so avoid sharing clothes or other used materials .Also try to wash your hands and body with antiseptic soap .
If any Pus comes out , let it drain and wash it 2 to 3 times a day with soft loos dressing .That's how it heal. But dont prick or incise it by self .

In your case , if this has been for 7 days , and there is still iflamation going on ( the red skin around the boil) I would personally like to use some oral antibiotics tablets for this .So though not an emeregency ( untI'll you feel sick or have high grade fever , in which case we need urgent chek up and may need IV antibiotics and admission , that's rare luckily ) but still my personal advice would be to go your doc for some antibiotics tablets for this.

Hopes this is clear now .Please dont hesitate to ask anything else you need to know. I will be glad to answer any further question.
Kind Regards
Dr Rahman
