I Woke Up With A Sore Throat , Last Night My Neck Felt Stiff

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Mar 2025
Question: Hi. I woke up with a sore throat on Thursday, last night my neck felt stiff and I realized that the lymph nodes under my ears and down the sides of my neck are swollen. This morning, 100.3 axillary. I looked in my throat, and I do have cobblestone throat, but one of my usual bumps now has two white spots on it. Overall I’m tired and achy. No cough, runny nose, congestion or any other symptoms. Should I just try to treat at home?

Brief Answer:
Acute Pharyngitis, Rule out Strep throat, Infectious Mononucleosis, Covid-19

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. From your description, this is acute pharyngitis.

2. Rule out Strep throat, Infectious Mononucleosis, and Covid-19.

3. Hence it is better to get examined by a local doctor rather than trying to treat this at home. Throat swabs and blood tests can be done by your doctor as required.

4. Treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Amoxycillin clavulanate and supportive medication to help relieve fever, pain, body ache, muscle pain (myalgia) is recommended. A medicated oral rinse/gargle will be useful. Adequate rest, hydration, and a bland diet should be taken.

I hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards

Thank you. Just one last question. Is it possible for tonsils to grow back? I had mine removed years ago, but where they were is very swollen, red, and it looks like there is tissue there. It’s just odd looking so I’m curious. Thank you so much for your time.

Brief Answer:
No. Tonsils do not grow back after tonsillectomy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. No, It is not possible for tonsils to grow back after tonsillectomy.

2. However if some tonsil tissue is left behind at the time of dissection during the tonsillectomy, the remaining tissue can swell up and resemble the tonsils.

3. The tonsil is a small part of the entire lymphoid tissue spread throughout the throat and nasopharynx known as Waldeyer's inner ring. This tissue remains active and may even attempt to take over the functions of the tonsils if the tonsillectomy is done at a very early age.

4. For example, the cobblestone appearance of the back of the throat is due to inflamed lymphoid tissue normally distributed randomly in small islands throughout the posterior wall of the throat.

I hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
