Question: I would like best medical advice on the following two questions regarding a 16-year-old child for whom I share custody with my ex-wife:
1. During the pandemic, is it medically advisable for the child to be in contact with others for non-essential services like behavioral therapy and piano lessons?
2. During the pandemic, is it medically advisable for the child to go back and forth between the two households or would it be safer for him to remain in one household or the other?

Brief Answer:
it would be safer to reduce exposure to the virus

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although infections with covid-19 are usually mild for 16-years old individuals, it would be advisable to reduce the number of contacts and the risk for infection. So the answers would be:

(1) the piano lessons cannot be considered essential. You and the child's therapist should decide about behavioral therapy sessions. Postponing them sounds like a good idea, but it depends on the situation your child is facing and how important the sessions might be.

(2) In theory, when neither of the parents has symptoms, it should be relatively safe to visit both households. You should understand though that this move may increase the risk of contracting the virus for all of you. It is believed that the virus can be transmitted even before any symptom becomes evident (during the incubation phase). Therefore moving around is not advisable.

I hope I've answered your questions. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
