Question: I would like to try and understand why my husband is bleeding from his penis after he ejaculates. He has sought help about this from the Dr.'s at the VA. Hospital. However, it see seems that they don't seem to put to much stock in it. They stuck that thing in his penis and it seem as though they are saying that this happens to men his age. I 'm concerned for him and for me.

Brief Answer:
it's a common complaint

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the doctors are right that this is a common complaint for men of his age. Some basic investigation is still required starting with a digital rectal examination and PSA to check for prostatic causes. If they're both negative (no abnormal findings) then a culture can be taken to check for infectious causes. Finally urine cytology (checking for cancer), CT scan (checking for cancer mostly) and cystoscopy (I suppose this is what you've described by "the thing they stuck in his penis"; this is a test to detect anatomic abnormalities like urethral problems or tumors) will provide additional information. If everything is negative then he shouldn't still worry as up to 50% of patients experience the same symptoms without ever finding the cause even after appropriate investigation. Although this sounds a little disappointing you can look at its bright side which is that in most cases this symptom does not indicate a serious disease.
