Question: I%E2%80%99m 5%E2%80%994 and weigh 282. I am on a 1600 calorie diet to lose weight. I am also prediabetic. My periods tend to last too long more than two weeks. My doctor has prescribed norethindrone to stop the prolonged bleeding. I take 5 mg a day for 3 weeks then one week off each month for 3 months as I am losing weight. Does this medicine at 5mg cause blood clots ?

Brief Answer:
Norethindrone is not a significant risk factor for blood clots

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Basically there are two types of oral medications that can be used for contraception or abnormal bleeding; estrogen-progestin combination medications, and progestin-only medications. Estrogen is a known risk factor for blood clots, but fortunately norethindrone is a progestin-only medication, and has not been shown to be a significant risk factor for blood clots. For this reason, it is considered an acceptable medication for patients with a history or even active blood clots.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
