Question: IS it harmful to take food supplements along with this thyroid med. Levothyroxine 0.025MG? I am 89 years young and after a routine yearly blood workup my DR. Discovered I had a thyroid problem and prescribed this med. I had a severe problem with my 54 year old handicapped wheelchair bound son for 37 years and when this situation happened I could no longer care for him and it resulted in him being placed in a nursing facility which did not go well with me after caring for him all those years and things were happing to me I just did not understand and I was having a very hard time dealing with, so I started taking suppliments I believe could help me---for my eyes my brain and muscle support. They must have helped , I felt pretty good and my DR. said I eas in better health than anyone she had seen in her office--until this. I knew something was happening before I found this blood thyroid thing out, I started loosing my hair and my head was way off . I truely do believe in SOME of the supplements, but am afraid to mix them with the med.. Can you help? Thank you so much, YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
It is not harmful

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Levothyroxine is a form of a thyroid hormone that your body naturally makes, so it generally does not have any harmul interactions with other medications, and I would not expect any problems with food supplements. However, it is better to take levothyroxine on an empty stomach, and some foods and supplements can interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine, so I would recommend you take levothyroxine on an empty stomach, maybe first thing in the morning, and after you take it, wait 30 minutes before eating. I would suggest taking the food supplements later in the day, just to avoid any problems between the two.

I hope that helps and you are feeling better soon, please let me know if you have any other questions about that and I would be glad to discuss it further with you.

No question, just a very heartfelt thank You for your very helpful answer. It was pretty much as I thought but just wanted to be sure . I have been pretty much relying on these supplements to keep the right level of things for my eyes ,head and anything else I check out to be good for my body health and not harmful. I lost so much weight and could not eat after having to put my son in a 24 hour care facility, I had to do something and it was working. Thank you so much for your hlp until I can see my primary Dr. in a couple of days. Again thank you, XXXXXXX bonnell
