I'm 24 Weeks Pregnant And Have Used Meth Every Day.

Question: I'm 24 weeks pregnant and have used meth every day. I had an ultrasound and everything was normal. I have stopped using but I'm worried it will show up if they drug test the newborn meconium or cord at birth
Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
The meconium starts forming from the fourth month of pregnancy. So testing of meconium may show the drug of abuse. Newborn Urine test will not show any drug as you stopped the use of the drug now.
I am happy to know that you have stopped the use of the drug. Please don't use any such drugs and stop smoking if you are a smoker. It can have deleterious effects on the baby.
Best wishes.

is it possible to keep it from showing up? I don't want to have social services involved and take the baby. especially since I have stopped using meth.
Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
It is not possible to keep it from showing up. Since you have already stopped using Meth, the amount detected will be minimal. Once they confirm that you have stopped using Meth since long, social services may not take your baby.
Best wishes.

but since I have stopped using it possible that it will not be detectable in the Baby? I know in adults there is a cut off limit amount to be able to detect it. is it possible that it would be undetected if I'm no longer using meth
Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
As I said earlier, meconium starts forming from the fourth month of pregnancy. Drug used from that time can be detected in Meconium. The tests are very sensitive and can detect drug amount in picograms too.
Not all tests are 100% accurate. Let us hope that the drug will not be detected in baby's meconium.
Best wishes.
