I'm 75 With Daily Anxiety, Sometimes Panic, Always Feel Fearful,
You should be checked for depression and anxiety.
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch,
Thanks for using 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I'm sorry that you've been having so many medical and emotional issues. It sounds to me that the most pressing issue for you is anxiety and depression.
Likely the best medication to treat both of these for you would be antidepressant medications called Serotonergic reuptake inhibitors. There are many different kinds of these medications, and patients respond differently to each, so you may need to try a few different ones before you find one that works well for you.
The Diazepam that you are taking will relieve anxiety temporarily but does not treat your depression and ultimately I do not believe it is a good long-term treatment for anxiety. I would suggest talking to your doctor about these issues as soon as you can so that you can be started on better treatment for this.
Given the rest of your history, I think the most likely cause for your alternating constipation and diarrhea would be a condition called irritable bowel syndrome. This is often brought on by stress. It can be treated with antispasmodic medication such as dicyclomine, as well as antidepressants such as the ones I discussed before.
The headache sounds like a tension headache and should get better with the treatment of your other conditions, and in the meantime can be treated with pain medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
Fortunately, diabetes is fairly well controlled, with the goal usually being less than 7.0 for hemoglobin A1c. I would encourage you to continue doing what you are doing for your diabetes, and with maybe a slight change in your medications or slightly improving your diet, you will likely be at goal soon.
I hope that helps, and that you are able to get help soon.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about any of that.
I would be glad to discuss with you further.
