Question: I’m a 54-year-old woman 200 pounds 5’8”. I’ve suffered from stomach issues and diarrhea for about 2 to 3 months. I’ve gone to my normal general doctor she did not seem concerned. I’ve had six stomach surgeries. Three lap band surgeries one to put in one to repair and one to remove. I also have had two hernia surgeries one when I was a baby, and one when I was 28 years old where they removed 4 feet of my intestine. My general doctor sent me to a G.I. doctor since I had not had a colonoscopy. The G.I. doctor did not seem concerned about my stomach pain either not quite sure if they did not believe that I was a stomach pain? He did a colonoscopy and found that my bowl was extremely inflamed. He did not prescribe anabiotic’s nor any test for my stomach nor did he tell me what to eat when I left and I could not get back into him for four weeks to see what the biopsy held. I took myself to the hospital for days ago. I was diagnosed with a couple of things but the first thing was C-DIFF. They put me on a strong anabiotic Flagyl and I was sent home last night. Quite honestly I feel worse now. I’m not tolerating the anabiotic at all I have extreme nausea no nausea pills were given. And my stomach is extremely distended. Help!

Hello,

I carefully read your query. Flagyl is a very good drug for C. Difficile infection. Many patients find it difficult to tolerate it because it upsets the stomach. On the other hand it doesn't generally hurt or cause damage to the stomach. It might be easier to tolerate it if you take it after food and not in an empty stomach. Avoid any amount of alcohol while you take it because it causes a reaction with alcohol and make patients have a lot of nausea and stomach upset. Even small amount of liquor in candies can cause this reaction.
Meanwhile taking some omeprazole to quiet down the stomach, 20 mg once a day, and metoclopramide 10 mg 3 times a day might help with the stomach irritation.

Eating 5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones might be helpful, eating fruit and vegetables (avoid the ones you notice hurt your stomach like acid ones like tomatoes and lemons), drink frequent small amount of water and avoid alcohol, smoking, coffee. Avoid fast foods, fried and spicy food.

Meanwhile you will need to wait for the biopsy report as it may tell a lot about the cause of diarrhea and the proper treatment.

I hope this answers to your query and is helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.
