Question: I’m a male who received receptive anal sex. During the intercourse the condom popped and we discovered after. Two weeks later he tested positive for syphilis but negative for HIV. I tested only for syphilis a week later and it was negative. We had no contact since. I donated blood after the 12 month window. I didn’t know until afterwards that there is a window and should’ve had a test after three months. I know the CDC requires the Red Cross to test for HIV, syphilis, HBsAG, among other things. I also know that they are required to test all blood and will contact you if there is a negative. Over a year any antibodies should be detected. I only am concerned because recently I’ve had two spots appear on my head and I’ve been fatigued although I think it’s a cold or allergies. Should his negative test (even with a window) and no rejection from the Red Cross be satisfactory enough to relieve my concerns?

Brief Answer:
Your recent symptoms I think are not related to HIV or syphilis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in "Ask a Doctor".
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Based on your history, donating blood after 1 year from the sexual contact and has no rejection from the Red Cross means that you are negative for HIV syphilis and hepatitis and this is a good news.
Related your recent symptoms I think are not related to HIV or syphilis and you shouldn' worry because the results of blood from Red Cross are very accurate.
Please could you send me an attached picture of your spots to define better.

Hope I have answered your query.
Feel free to ask me further.

Thank you for your response. I’ve attached pictures to the ‘Update Reports’ section. I have eczema but it has always been localized to my hands and feet. Although in general I have sensitive skin and don’t remember any possible irritants. My concern mainly arises from feeling sick which may be from allergies and the need to replace my cpap tubing and wear it consistently. When I did not know about the window it lead to think whether one disease and not the other. But the lack of rejection, as noted, leads to believe that isn’t the case. Also my current girlfriend, who knows about everything, has been sick for the past 16 days or so, but has gotten better. She maintained her cough but got a suppressant and it’s starting to clear up. Thank you for your response.

I have seen the picture and I think you shouldn't worry because this is just an infected pimple.
