I'm A Trucker And Of Course Sit For Long Periods
Question: I'm a trucker and of course sit for long periods of time. I've recently have been experiencing pain radiating down my right leg.Have needed to shift weight to left side to alleviate the pain that seems to increase after an hour or so of driving. My seat is next to new and does not have metal seat base. Its a flexible base material.Have needed to stop driving more frequently now to alleviate the pain by walking around my truck. It helps. Also use Air Hawk seat cushion peroidically. Am wondering whats going on?
Just to note Ive had more joint pain in recent years at the end of the week when I'm doing shop work on my truck. A lot of walking on concrete floors... need to take at least 3 Motrin or Aleve to cut pain level down. So stiff and sore by Sat. evening ....painful to even get up from lazyboy.Just wondering if anything can be done for this too?
Brief Answer:
leg pain from prolonged sitting; joint pain walking on hard floors
Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. Kab, and welcome to Ask a Doctor. I have read your queries and here is my advice.
The leg pain you feel with prolonged sitting could be due to a buildup of fluid in your leg veins. This is called chronic venous disease when the valves in your leg veins don't work properly to keep blood flowing.
If your physician feels this is what is causing your pain, he/she can recommend knee-high compression stockings to ease discomfort.
Another common cause could be narrowed leg arteries due to fatty plaques in the artery wall causing partial blockage of blood flow.
Your joint pain might be from osteoarthritis.
Wearing soft shoes like sneakers can reduce the floor discomfort. Your physician will also provide help for your joints.
Hope I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help and will wait for follow up questions you might have.
