Question: I'm almost 70, and still haven't fathered a son , any good chances of positive results ? I have good erections and very virile!
Is lower sperm count dangerous for older men trying to father kids?

Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Male fertility depends on several factors, age being just one of them. Studies have shown that an increased male age increases the time it takes to get pregnant, and increases the risk of infertility (one study showed that men older than 40 were 30% less likely to get pregnant within 12 months). No study I have seen addresses fertility at your age, but you could expect that number would be increased. However, this still means that you can probably still have children at your age. As far as the pregnancy and developmental outcomes of the child, studies have shown only a very small negative effect of paternal age on those outcomes, too small to discourage you from having children for that reason.
A lower sperm count would not be dangerous, the only risk would be not being able to get pregnant.
I should also say, this assumes you have not tried to have children in the past. If you tried before and were not able to, this of course significantly increases your chances of not being able to have children now.

Thanks, I did impregnate my wife at the time but she miscarried, I was26 yrs, old! 44 years ago! Even if it wasn't a full pregnancy, could this be a good sign?
