Question: I'm an otherwise healthy 26 year old female. About a month ago my daughter tested positive for strep throat so when my throat started to hurt about 3 weeks ago I thought that was it especially since I had no other symptoms. I got a script for an antibiotic and it didn't help. My throat is still scratchy and sore and my neck feels tight and it's hard to swallow. I again have no other symptoms of illness whatsoever. I don't want to visit an urgent care because of the current pandemic. Help!

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Antibiotic of choice for a Strep throat is amoxicillin/penicillin.
Usually 10 days of amoxicillin are prescribed for infection to prevent secondary complications.
If a patient is allergic or non responding,5 days of azithromycin 500 mg once a day is prescribed.

Don't be sleep deprived as sleep improves body immunity to fight infection.
Drink plenty of water and oral fluids.
Have bland and soothing diet.
Avoid sour and cold foods.
Drink warm liquids like tea and soups.
Do warm saline gargles.
Chew throat lozenges for soothing of throat.
For throat pain and fever, take over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Use a humidifier,if needed.

Strep throat infection is highly contagious so patient should maintain good hand hygiene, cover his/her mouth while coughing or sneezing and refrain from sharing personal items with others.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
