Brief Answer:
It is considered safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

According to U S FDA buprenorphine is classified Category C for pregnancy which means no proper information available about its adverse effects on baby. However the available data indicate toward safety of buprenorphine during pregnancy and breast feeding.

However I need to caution you that use of buprenorphine can cause neonatal abstinence syndrome, a condition which is akin to opioid withdrwal syndrome among other age groups. In this condition the newborn shows extreme hypersensitivity, irritability, sleep disturbances, constant crying among others.

I hope this answers you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more concerns.
Thanks and regards.

Do you know anything about naloxone? I've been told that orally it does not really absorb so there's no risk to the baby, and then I've been told it's harmful.

Brief Answer:
Both the statements are true

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up.

Naloxone is administered with buprenorphine as it minimises the risk of diversion and using buprenorphine through injection route. This is possible because on oral route it does not get absorbed and the effect of buprenorphine are there. However on injection route the effect of naloxone become obvious and the person experiences severe withdrawal syndrome.

In reference to your question it is harmful if it gets in the system but since it does not get absorbed no harmful effects are there with naloxone when used through oral route with buprenorphine.

I hope this answers you further.
