I’m Traveling In South East Asia And Got Diagnosed With

Question: I’m traveling in South East Asia and got diagnosed with Chlamydia and BV. The doctor at first thought it was Gonorrhea (I had to leave town and had bad symptoms so he assumed it before getting back the test results) Since I was going to a more rural place he gave me an IV with the common Gonorrhea antibiotic (2g total) and 2 pills of Azimagbro500. He emailed me the same day saying it was Chlamydia and BV and advised me to keep taking Azimagbro 500 for another 3 days (2 pills at night), Zanroxime 250 2 pills at night and Metrodinazole 2 pills at night. So Ive just gotten wifi and have been taking it as prescribed but saw that for Chlamydia only a single dose is usually necessary. I’m on day 4- do I have to finish now or not? I’m scared all these pills might do more harm than good.
I also havent taken the Metrodinazole yet.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
one dose is usually enough

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

welcome to the 'Ask a Doctor' service.

For chlamydia urethritis and/or cervicitis a dingle dose of azithromycin (1gram) is enough and is the recommended treatment option. Regarding BV metronidazole is required. 500mg bid is the recommended dosage. I couldn't find what azimagpro is but I suppose it's azithromycin. I couldn't find zanroxime either. Are you sure you've typed the names correctly?

Taking azithromycin for more days exposed you to increased risk for side effects but don't worry that much because sometimes we do prescribe this antibiotic for several days. In most cases it's used for 3 days but sometimes for more (but not more than 5 days usually).

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards!

So this is what the packaging says:

Azimagbro - 500mg Azithromycin dihydrate usp
I’ve been taking 1x2 pills in the evening for the last 3 days - today would be day 4 - do I still need that last dose or can I stop now?

Zanroxime - Cefixime 250mg
I’ve been taking 1x2 pills in the evening for the last 3 days too - still needed?

Metrodanizole 500mg
How long do I have to take this for? The doctor told me to take 1x2 tablets in the evening for 5 days - 500mg is one pill so 10 pills total over 5 days - 5g? Can you please advise on the exact dosage again

I just feel like this is a lot of pills and medicine for something that usually gets treated with a single dose in the western countries (for Chlamydia for example). It really upsets my stomach and gives me cramps. I know you’re not supposed to stop taking antibiotics but as far as I am understanding I’m taking 4 times the dose than other people do to treat Chlamydia (4g) Even the packaging suggests 1 dose of two tablets to treat it. He also gave me some antibiotics for Gonorrhea through IV injection which he probably just did for the money I’m guessing... I will be traveling for another two months so I want to make sure everything’s cured and ok and I also dont want to make it worse.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
The recommended treatment for Chlamydia is a single 1 gram dose of azithromycin. For bacterial vaginosis you should be taking 500mg of metronidazole twice daily for 7 days. If you've taken 1000mg of azithromycin then you should be OK. Taking more may cause side effects but the treatment is complete anyway.

Thank you! I also have Flagystin - but only 5 “capsules”. would you recommend using those for 5 days at night or the 5 days/ 1g a day Metrodinazole
Orale?

What about the Cefixime - still necessary?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
oral

Detailed Answer:
Metronidazole should be used orally. The correct dosage is 500mg twice daily that is 1000mg per day in two divided doses. Cefixime is not necessary for the treatment of BV or Chlamydia so unless there is suspicion for another infection, it's not necessary. I would recommend sticking to the dosage, as alternate dosages may be less effective than the recommended one.
