In 1986 I Took A Fall From About 13' And
Question: In 1986 I took a fall from about 13' and landed squarely on my buttocks. Immediately felt pain, numbness, and tingling. Still hurt but felt better after a rest and was told to return to duty with ibuprofen. Eventually was x-rayed, and given more motrin, returned to duty.. Trips to Army docs went on for the next three years until I could take no more and left the service.. Fast forward.. through 30+ years of pain, numbness, tingling.. Many MRI's (after service).. MRI reports have been fairly consistent..
L1-2 Disc dessication
L2-3 symetric bulge, mild degenarative changes
L3-4 symetric bulge, mild stenosis, facet arthrosis
L4-5 superimposed central disc protrusion, ligament of flavum buckling, posterior annular fissure, moderate to severe canal stenosis, moderate l&r foriminal stenosis
L5-S1 symetric bulge, mild foraminal narrowing, facet arthrosis, mild degenerative changes of the superior sacroiliac joints.
Considering the history I just gave, is it likely that the L4-L5 damage could have occurred when I fell in 1986? Is it more likely than not to have occurred during that fall?

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely to be related to trauma.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The MRI suggestive of degenerative(age-related wear and tear) changes and it is unlikely related to your previous trauma. All the features are typical of degenerative change and doesn't seem to be related to the trauma.
Trauma usually leads to undisplaced fractures or dislocation.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks

Then can you explain why have I experienced the pain, numbness, and tingling on a constant, chronic basis since the original injury? I know there are degenerative issues, we ALL some at my age. But I have had this chronic pain etc.. since 1986..
I suppose there is no way the trauma could have caused damage to the disc?
Thanks...

Brief Answer:
Trauma might have aggravated the whole process.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The trauma might have aggravated the ongoing degenerative change or caused disruption of the adaption.
The pain is due to compression of the nerve roots by bulging disc and degenerated spine.
You can opt for steroid injection to the spine which will give long term pain relief.
