Infant Died After Infection From RSV And Mycoplasma At The Same Time. Can You Pick It Up From Hospitals?
Question: hi, have you ever came a cross a case like this one: 2yrs boy infected with RSV and mycoplasma in the same time and died? the infection was picked from staying a night in a hospital!

I must admit I have never come across such an unfortunate case.It does seem to be a mystery.
RSV is very common in young children and its a self limiting viral infection.Mycoplasma is an atypical bacterial infection and yes resistant strains might be present in hospital settings.
Unless the boy is severely immunocompromised or has a hyperreactive airway disease infection with multiple organisms and drastic complications and death are not very likely.
There is a possibility that the child may have a community acquired RSV infection before he got superadded mycoplasma infection in which case as his lungs were in a state of compromise he could succumb to drastic complications from the bronchiolitis, pneumonitis and other complications if any like effusion, bronchospasm hypoxia etc.
In order to be able to provide you with better probable diagnoses, I request you to please send me some details like ,
1.Onset duration and progress of his symptoms.
2.The past medical or family history if significant for immunocompromised status.
3.The interventions or management done and the period of hospital stay after diagnosis.
4.If any xrays or blood investigations were done please upload it along with your follow up query.

It is a mystry and untill now no doctor has told me that s/he came across such thing. but I think of as a reason of death, just like car crashes or earthquakes...these are all reasons but at the end death is death!
I truely believe that the doctors here in Kuwait did the best possible job with my son. I might not be able to give full details about his condition but i'll give a summary if I may...
- the right medicin was started before they even get the blood test's results.
- he was so healthy and no family history in immunity issue.
- he was admitted at the very begining of the symptoms.
- 6 days later his oxygen dropped and had to be on the ventilator.
- liver enlarged 4 cm at this point.
- he was supported with fluids, oxygen, antibiotics and all the required medicins.
- through 26 days on the ventilator his condition goes up and down.
- at this point the liver got enlarged 12 cm!
- in the following 5 days the kidneys stopped working, and lungs were in a very bad condition that it had a hole and the air got out of it.
- the x-rays showed white lungs most of the days.
- Earlier two professors from USA & Canada (were visiting the country for workshops)checked on him and agreed with our doctors on the diagnosis and treatment steps. They told me that at this point we need to wait and see.
- at the end he passed away leaving me with a broken heart.
Now he's gone already, but I'm spreading his story hoping that it might help in any form! to make a doctor concider this possibility, to make a mom appreciate her time with her kids because we never know when will that time end! or to encourage hospital admin. to work on preventing the spread of infections among patients while they stay at hospitals.
