PEP has to be taken under the supervision of an HIV specialist.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to ASK A DOCTOR service.
Thanks for posting your query.
Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in HIV and AIDS is mainly meant for health care providers of various situations (Doctors, nurses, lab technicians, cleaning staff, and care providers of NGOs and also in house).
When there is an accidental or occupational exposure to infectious materials like blood and various other body fluids including semen and vaginal fluid, PEP will be able to abort the infection, if it has been started as early as possible and not later than 72 hours after the exposure of needle stuck or splash.
PEP is a combination of three ART drugs and has to be taken for 4 weeks under the supervision and guidance of an expert. There are some protocols that have to be followed. It's recommended to consult an expert nearby.
