Is 30mg Of Xanax The Right Medicine For Anxiety?

Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Hi Doctor, My 20 year old son was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and placed on Proxac. After 3 weeks this didn't seem to help. He is now on .5mg of Xanax 4 times daily. He doesn't drink. He is in college so it is difficult to see if he is staying on his dose. He only gets 1 month supply at a time. It has helped him tremendously. Mom and dad's concern is over what we read about this drug. Can he overdose on it? Is 30 days supply to much for him to have on him? How much would cause an overdose....? Concerned Parents

Brief Answer:
30days dose is not much as long as his doctor advises him well!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your son is experiencing. However, I am happy that he is being well managed and reporting significant improvement. Xanax can be given as much as 10 mg at once. the major fear is that it causes reduced state of consciousness and should he overdose on it, he may over sleep and have difficulties with his breathing. What it takes is for an honest discussion with his treating physician to understand that all drugs can be harmful when misused and not used as directed so that he can pay attention to this. A month's dosage is good and with good advise, I have no doubt that he would keep to it as directed. Being concerned parents, I have no doubts that you brought him up in a decent way and should not be as worried as if he had no guided upbringing.

In all, communicate with him and make him to understand the importance of using his drugs as directed.

I hope this helps. I wish your son well and you both(parent) well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
