default
Posted on Fri, 12 Jul 2024
Question: Hi Doctor,
My child (boy baby) was born on 20-Feb-2023, at present (after 40 days) having a weight of 3.5 KG, Is that normal weight at this stage?
Due to less breastfeeding, having formula milk of 30ml every 3-4hr and 10ml MotherMilk
Sometimes Vomiting, kindly suggest the ML and duration if possible.
When should we start providing solid food, after how many months.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Kindly provide birth weight

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sumesh,
Thank you for posting to us.
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns

To decide whether this weight is adequate or not, I need to know what was the birth weight.

In a term baby, we need not be very strict about the amount and frequency of feeds. The policy is "feeding on demand"- give a feed when the baby feels hungry. Amount also, let the baby decide- give until he stops taking further.

A 3.5kg baby needs approximately 500ml feeds/day. So we can give about 40-45ml every 2 hours, or 60-70ml every 3 hours(formula + breast milk combined). You can give direct breast feeds every 2-3 hours, and top-up with formula feeds soon after each feeds if baby is not satisfied after emptying both breasts.

Solid foods are better started after 6 months of age.

To comment on the adequacy of weight gain, kindly let me know the birth weight.
Thank you
Dr Aslam.
