Question: I have just today been prescribed buspirone for panic attacks that I just started experiencing after my pacer defibulator malfunctioned and shocked me 34 times. If I start taking these r they really going to help and can I stop taking them anytime or do I have to when off. I also hav been prescribed zanax for two yrs. for stress 0.25 dose that I hardly ever took until now. Since the shocks and surgery I been taking 2 -3x day and some times an extra one. These episodes I get I thought it was my heart. They are terrible

Brief Answer:

It is a good anti-anxiety medication. You can't stop cold turkey!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have reviewed your information fully and do understand how traumatized this experience with 34shocks delivered could be. Anxiety and PTSD related to this is not unusual.

Buspirone is a good drug for anxiety. However, you cannot stop this cold turkey. With continued review of monitorings by your cardiologist, I am sure these are not from the heart.

My advice, take buspirone, stay calm and let's see how you respond. Am optimistic about this and sure you would get good results, too!.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Dr.Ditah, I looked up the side effects of the Buspar. Scared the s T out of me same symptoms as what I experience with my episodes i.e. Fast /rapid heart beat, clammy dizzy, light headeness, and more terrible ones. Won't know if I'm having a true episode or side effects from buspar. Won't the increase in zanax be enough? I'm already on zanax I really don't want to go thru those awlful side effects and hav to when off two medicines!

How long does it take to get off buspar safe if on 5mg twice day? Off the record. Do you know any doctors in the kalamazoo mi or surrounding areas that would like a part time job in addiction medicine clinic assisting on intake, doing 60 Evals on patients, dose adjustment? Very interesting work. All our Doc's love it. Check out the web for Victory Clinical services.

Brief Answer:

Depends on how long you have taken this!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It depends on how long you were on this. If you have only taken this for a few months, then a few weeks would be okay to get you off.

If you have taken for several years, then a few months might be needed to safely get you off. However, if you have taken just for a few weeks or days, getting off could be done in days as well.

5mg is such a minor dose and addiction is really not a major problem in this group unless among persons who have taken it for several years, at times months.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
