Is DVT A Risk Factor In Early Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: Hi.
Tonight i was sitting in a chair and my foot fell asleep. I tried to stand up and walk around so my foot would wake up, and when i stepped down my body rolled forward and my foot rolled back so the top of my foot was touching the floor. My foot was still asleep and i was still able to walk around. Once my foot woke up, i noticed that i have pain in the top of my foot and it is starting to affect some toes. I have no pain in my ankle. I am 5 weeks pregnant and know that both pregnancy and minor injuries can increase your risk of DVT, so im worried about that. I have been trying to rotate my foot and walk around constantly in order to keep the blood flowing through my foot. The outer side of the top of my foot hurts pretty bad. Could this cause a DVT? Should i go see my doctor? I attached two pictures of the affected foot.

Brief Answer:
its just sprain. not dvt

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.

DVT is not a risk in so early in pregnancy. It may occur during end period of pregnancy as fetus reaches maximum weight and compression of arteries and veins starts occuring.

And other thing is DVT pain will occur in calf region and never in ankle.
I think that as you had that little accident of turning your foot upturned, it may have caused some sprain injury to ligaments in dorsum of foot.

Just apply some ice to the top of swelling. If you have wrap a crepe bandage.

For pain you can take only Paracetamol. No NSAIDs should be taken. If pain persists for longer visit your doctor for clinical examination of the foot.

Doesn't look anything serious. Just follow above advice and you will be fine.
I hope I have answered your query.
If you have any questions kindly ask me back.

Thank you

I may have misworded my question. Im not worried that its currently a DVT, I'm worried that it could turn into one. The top of my foot still hurts so bad. Could a foot injury like this potentially turn into a DVT? What are the signs i'd need to look for?

Thanks!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for following up with me.
Deep vein thrombosis is a condition when there is thrombus formed in one of the deep veins which causes problem like edema, redness and severe pain in the leg.
No there is no chance of this pain of yours turning into dvt in future.
DVT is problem in people who are-
1. Immobilized for prolonged time like icu patients or very long operations.
2. Females taking bc pills for long periods are prone.
3. Old age
4. Pregnancy but in last month. Not early pregnancy
5. Genetic causes like some protein c and s deficiency causing clot formation prone condition.
Signs you need to look for are
1. Severe pain in leg usually in calf region. Pain is severe as you cannot walk at all.
2. Swelling in one leg and redness and shiny surface over the same leg.
These are the things which point toward dvt.
As I mentioned before yours probably look like ligament injury and nothing near dvt.
Kindly follow as advised before.
Hope this satisfies your query.
If you have any questions kindly ask me back. thank you
