Question: Will Demerol be the best drug for post operative facelift surgery? Age65, weight183, height5'8'. Cirrosis, alcoholism have not drank for 36 years, Hep C treatment winner!

Brief Answer: it is good Detailed Answer: Yes, any opiate is good to control the pain post operatively. Good for you that you stopped alcohol and you treated hepatitis C. However if you have cirrhosis i would suggest taking the lowest possible dose of pain medication (avoid any acetaminophen, since an overdose can be fatal for you, although it is not necessarily contraindicated in patients with cirrhosis). Therefore demerol is ok, although a strong medication. There are many other options such as morphine, oxycodone, etc. Keep in mind that in patients with cirrhosis the medication takes longer to clear from your body. It can also trigger "encephalopathy", which is basically drowsiness, confusion, altered mental status, so if you have a history of "hepatic encephalopathy" due to your liver disease then you should probably not take it, or take as little as possible.
