Question : I understand gabapentin can also help persons going through alcohol withdrawl. When did the FDA approve it for this purpose?

It is one of the off label uses of gabapentin. This means that it has not been officially approved for this reason but has been found to be helpful.

Gabapentin has a number of different off label uses- neuropathic pain (nerve related pain), fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome.
Helping with the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal is one of its other off label uses.
