Is HCG Value Of 928 Cause For Concern?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
I had my last periods on 12June, 2015. I undertook a home pregnancy test 5 days back and it turned out to be positive. 3 days back I had my blood tested for beta HCG. The results showed that my HCG was 928, which according to my doctor is very low. She has given me pills (susten200). My husband and myself are a little worried.Could anything be wrong? Please advice.
Beta hCG levels are normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.Three days ago , your gestational period was 4 weeks 5 days by your last menstrual period date.At the gestational age of 4-5 weeks, the beta hCG level can range anywhere between 5 -7340 mIU/ml, and the numbers vary from women to women.
What is important is that the value of beta hCG level doubles every 48 hours, as this is indicative of normal viable intrauterine pregnancy. Your hCG level is completely normal for your gestational age.
Moreover, beta hCG levels are done or monitored in those pregnancies where the doctor has a suspicion of ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy or non viable fetus. Such a diagnosis can be done by ultrasound. If no such suspicion is there, hCG is not done in normal pregnancy. I see no reason for doing this test in your case.
Susten 200 is a progesterone which is given to make the uterine environment more favourable for the fetus, however it has no role in increasing hCG levels.
I suggest you both to not to worry as your hCG levels are normal. Stress can adversely affect the fetus. You should take folic acid 5 mg tablet once daily as it is known to decrease the incidence of congenital anomalies in the fetus.
I wold further suggest you to get a get a ultrasound done after one week to assess the viability of fetus.
Be positive and hopeful.

I had my blood tested again yesterday for beta HCG. My HCG level has increased to 2612. Is that a good sign? In the lab report the optimum level for 5-6 weeks is shown as 13000-49000. Please advice.
Thanks & regards,

Normal levels
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX thanks for responding. The beta hCG levels have increased more than double times in 48 hours, which is indicative of a normal viable pregnancy with good prognosis.
You were just 5 weeks ( gestational age by last menstrual period) yesterday, and if you calculate and double the level of beta hCG every48 hours, then in within next week it will exceed14000 mIU/ml, which lies in the range for 5-6 weeks gestation by the lab standards.

I would like to thank you for your timely advices. Your early responses have indeed been a great comfort to me.
Today I had my ultrasound scan. The results of the scan showed that I have a intrauterine pregnancy with yolk sac of 2mm. The results also shows that I have grade1 fatty liver. Will fatty liver have any adverse effects on pregnancy?
Also please advice if I should abstain from intercourse in the coming days.
I would also like to know if it is ok to travel during first trimester.
Thanks and regards,
XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I feel happy to have helped you.
Grade one fatty liver is quite a common finding in ultrasound and has no adverse effects on the fetus or pregnancy.
It is advisable to abstain from intercourse in first trimester, till 12 weeks of gestation.
Travel for short distance is safe in first trimester, however bumpy roads and fast rides should be avoided. Air travel is not advisable till10-12 weeks of pregnancy.
