Is HIV ELISA Antibodies Test Taken At 6.5 Months After Exposure Conclusive?
I had protected sex with a CSW in Aug,2014. After a month the anxiety of HIV started crepping in and i took the HIV Elisa antibodies 1&2 test after 5 months of exposure...
and it came back as Non-Reactive. After a month i.e aroud 174 days after exposure (nearly 6 months) , i again took the HIV 1/2 Antibodies & P24 Antigen Combi test and it again came
back as Non-Reactive (with Index Value 0.09). I again took the HIV ELISA Antibodies test on 2nd March, 2015 after nearly 6.5 months of exposure and it again came
back as Non-Reactive. However, i still have the anxiety and fear. Do i need to undergo any more tests or are the test conclusive.
Also, is it possible that a person can sero-convert 6.5 Months after possible exposure?
I also consulted a doctor and he told me that the HIV virus can stay in your system
for 2 years without getting detected by the tests. Is it true?
Kindly let me know whether i can forget about this incident and move on with my life without any worry or do i still need some tests to be sure.
You are not suffering from HIV infection & there are no chance of the same.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome and thanks for posting your query to healthcare magic. I can understand your concern for the HIV and its test results.
After analyzing the query with best diligence and interpreting each and every point let me first reassure you first that you are not suffering from HIV infection and there are no chance of the same.
Let me simplify the things and give you medical and scientific facts behind my firm declaration- Let you know about HIV infection:
In an unprotected intercourse with a HIV positive person the HIV viruses gets entered into the body and divides in innumerous numbers(millions of viruses per ml).
After a period of 2-6 week there is mounting of antibodies against the viruses. These antibodies can take at the maximum of 8-10 weeks of the period to get expressed.
Therefore the infection can be analyzed by two ways -
-A): By HIV virus detection: done by RNA- PCR. It tells us the number of copies of virus present in per ml of blood. By the latest of methods the viruses can be detected within 2 weeks of period.
B): By HIV antibody Detection: AS told earlier once the antibodies appear maximum of 8-10 weeks then these antibodies to HIV virus persist throughout life.
The protocol of the antibody tests done for HIV is as follows: One HIV antibody test at 6-8 weeks and then a follow up final test at 3 months (84 days or 12 weeks).
Antibodies once formed to HIV can never disappear. So if a person has HIV infection, 3 months of period is the sufficient of time when we say to be fully sure of whether HIV is present or not.
Now correlating all the facts and interpreting with your situation:
1. The very first thing of most help is that your act was a protected one. It is rarest or rare chance in our medical science to get HIV infection despite using condoms that too by improper use.
2. HIV 1/2 Antibodies & P24 Antigen Combo test or HIV ELISA Antibodies test done any time after 3 months is most conclusive. In your case it is done after 6 months so is confirmatory.
3. It is practically not possible to get silent infection of HIV virus without showing in the test. It is practically impossible to have undetectable HIV virus.
4. On the basis of simple medical facts related to HIV it is not possible that a person can seroconvert 6.5 Months after possible exposure. Sero-conversion is present only 2-6 weeks after infection.
There are no further tests required and so do not to worry at all. I have many times seen your kind of cases getting depressed due to so many type of worries which actually interfere in the days to day life and even there is correlation of all minor to minor things with HIV.
So my dear young man, just relax and relieve all your stress regarding the issue. I always guide to use the best protection in form of condoms for safer sex.
I hope above information will relax you. If you have any further queries I will be glad to help.

HIV ELISA Antibodies 1 and 2: maximum detection period within 84 days.
Detailed Answer:
Dear young fellow,
Welcome back and thanks for your further queries.
To clear your mind regarding the window period: It is the maximum of time between the entry of the virus to its detectability by various tests.
So if a test detects the particular virus early then the window period is short and if the detection is long then accordingly the window period is prolonged.
During the early phase of detection of HIV virus, the detection usually was possible in around 6 moths of period. Those were the first generation tests. After second generation tests the window period became shorter and now by the help of latest 4th generation tests it has been even reduced to few weeks.
By the help of RNA PCR the detection can be done any time after 14 days. So with advancement the detection has been possible within weeks.
The various sites where we find 6 months of period as window period are actually now obsolete.
HIV ELISA Antibodies 1 and 2 has now given the maximum detection period within 84 days or in simple words 3 months. If a person found negative after 3 months then we declare it as negative for HIV. I have already given the scientific basis of testing in the previous mail for the same. Thanks to all the latest tests that we are able to detect eh infection at the earliest within few days of period too!!!
So, I reassure you fully that your test results are totally fine and there is no need of any further testing in your case.
My all best wishes for you future family life.
I hope above information will relax you. If you have any further queries I will be glad to help or if not then can close the query and rate the discussion.

Detailed Answer:
Dear young buddy,
Welcome back to the forum and thanks for your follow up.
Regarding hepatitis C testing : in my view there is no need to go for the same. In your kind of cases I generally do not recommend the same. It is due to the fact that hepatitis C virus is generally spread by blood transfusion or by intravenous drug abuse. Sexual mode is not a mode of infection in hepatitis C.
