Is HIV Test Done After One Year Conclusive?
Question: I have a question regarding my possible HIV status; approximately 1 year ago, I had oral and vaginal sex with a woman of unknown status. A condom was used throughout, and to the best of my memory, it remained intact, though I did not think to look. Over the past year, I have taken over 1 dozen ORAQUICK in home HIV tests (saliva check), and took a finger prick test at a clinic. All tests came back negative, including last weeks saliva test (marking 1 year since last sexual encounter). Should I still be concerned about HIV if I have had no other contact?
Brief Answer:
These tests are conclusive after a 12 week window period from sex encounter
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I have gone through your query and I have understood it.
Oraquick and finger prick tests are antibody based Hiv tests which look for circulating antiHiv antibodies. These tests are conclusive and of value, only if they are performed at 12 weeks or later after a risky sexual encounter. Within the first 12 weeks they are not conclusive. Therefore, if any of these tests which you did were after a window period of 12 weeks (which I presume is the case) from sexual encounter then you are Ok and there is no need to do any further tests.
