Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: I m 37M. Had protected sex with CSW with double protection on Oct 19th. I am sure there were no cracks, no tearing. After that I had throat infection on 28th Oct. I was advised by a Lab Technician to go for Western Blot on Oct 7th as its shown faster reults. Elisa came negative but Western blot came with P41 p24 p531 p51 p17 bands on Nov 10th. I read lot research on WB which has different interpretations as per countries and I still positive on some interpretations but screening test has to be positive which I am not. I visited a doctor who said that he does not value Western Blot at all. He said that WB must only be considered for positive ELISA which I was not. He adviced to go for Prov Viral PCR DNA which can NOT DETECTABLE on Nov 14th. I again did a TRIDOT for my satisfaction which came negative Nov17th. I have no symptoms of HIV as such but I was down with a normal infection from Oct 27th to Nov 4th. I am totally terrified and weak since this. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Please go for another western blot from different but standard laboratory

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description it appears that you had false positive report of western blot analysis. We need to consider 99 % sensitivity of elisa which means than ELISA is enough to detect most cases on single test.

In my view rather than being panic it is important to undergo second Western blot from different laboratory. It is possible that earlier test was wrongly done and if done from the standard laboratory it may reveal true picture.

We can differentiate on basis of current symptoms as HIV have very low propensity to cause any symptoms.

I must assure you that possibility of HIV is very low as PCR DNA was found negative which have much higher value than western blot.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
