Is HSG A Painful Process?
My doctor has prescribed an HSG. I called up the radiology department and they haven't prescribed any antibiotics or painkiller. Moreover if the tube is blocked they'll perform tubal cannulation without sedation. I'm very scared of this and seeking advice.
How to handle your HSG smoothly.
Detailed Answer:
Hi!
I'm Dr. Neel Kudchadkar from Health Care Magic and I'm here to help you out with this issue. I have rather carefully examined your request, and being your personal doctor, I will handle all your medical issues.
You have mentioned that an HSG is going to take place soon.
You're concerned that no pain killers or antibiotics were given to you.
You are probably tense that the HSG might be a painful, and rather uncomfortable
experience.
So, I am here to reassure you and calm you down that it's OK.
This is because of these facts. You can understand and reason.
1. For you to experience pain during cannulation requires that the fallopian tubes
to have pressure and pain "receptors"
2. Let me give an example from day to day life. In order to obtain electrical
current, there has to be a plug and a socket, right?
3. "Receptors" are exactly like that. If they are located, you will feel the pain, if
not, the sensations produced will feel OK. Not that bad.
4. I wish to point out, with reference to women's health, that only the outer one
third of the vagina is sensitive for all practical purposes. Thus, speaking about
examinations, when the vagina is examined with an instrument, there will be
perhaps sensations NOT in the remaining two thirds.
5. If and only if the intestines are manipulated or touched in the HSG, there can
be pain. However, it is near impossibly difficult to practically come in contact
with the intestines.
I would say that these events will take place.
Inform the doctors in advance about your fears.
You have a right to take anti anxiety medication.
You have a right to confirm these facts that I have stated above, with your doctor.
Once you have heard, seen and felt reassured;
You can probably remember the HSG as a rather smooth and uneventful thing.
I'm here to help you, so feel free to express any unvoiced doubts or fears, even if they may seem silly and irrelevant to you, I would take them seriously.
I'm highly positive that you'll have a good experience.
I'm confident that you've understood the facts.
I have faith that since the "fear of the unknown" has been removed, eventually you've realized what a simple and routine event an HSG really is.
Take good care of yourself,
Be happy.
