Is HbA1c Of 6.1 A Cause For Concern?
Post prandial variations do occur
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for posting your query,
I have read through your query and can understand your concern,
The HbA1c value of 6.1 shows that you are in the higher side of borderline with good control. But since your post prandial blood sugar level shows 230, which is of course a higher value, it means that you have glucose intolerance.
Post prandial variations can occur depending on the physical activity, the meal composition, insulin sensitivity, gastric emptying time etc.
Therefore, I would suggest you to do a fasting blood sugar and look for the levels. Also are you on any oral hypoglycaemics now?
Hope this helps

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back,
Sorry for the delay in replying,,
As per your sugar levels, you need to continue on Glycomet 500mg, but if found to have high levels of blood sugar even after taking medication, you may need to consult with your treating doctor to discuss about the change in dosage.
HbA1c, is the measure of average glycaemic control for over the past 3 months. That is, it shows the measure of glucose which is attached to the red blood cells and gives the idea of glucose present in the body. Therefore, you need not compare the values of HbA1c with PPBS, as post prandial glucose levels shows the efficacy of insulin in your body, as in type 2 diabetes, it is insulin dependent.
I would strongly suggest you to do the following:
- maintain a healthy weight.
- consume foods less rich in carbohydrates and starch.
- avoid any soft drinks, energy drinks.
- do regular exercise or a daily minimum brisk walking for 45 mins is mandatory.
- maintain a stress free life
- take regular timed meals in intervals of 2-3 hourse rather than having 3 main meals.
Hope I have answered to your query,
Please feel free to discuss further,
