Hello,

Kaopectate basically contains Bismuth Subsalicylate, and it mainly helps in reducing diarrhea and diarrhea like symptoms in IBD. However, please note that it doesn't help in reducing the pain, bloating and swelling.

Safety-wise speaking, like any other medications, allergic reactions can happen where it's strictly contraindicated.

Apart from that, it's relatively safe for a person with normal renal function and can be taken up to 8weeks.

However, whether to continue it beyond that will be entirely dependent on the treating physician (there are instances where it's been continued for even years). However, for long-term use, bismuth level monitoring should be performed routinely (after every 6-8weeks)...
