Is Lipitor Intake Safe For Treatment Of High Blood Pressure?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: My doctor has asked me to start on Lipitor . I started a healthy diet and have been working out. She said that is fine even though I have lost 15 pounds but she wants me to start with the medication. I am afraid of it because I have heard that Lipitor has caused diabetes in 47% of the women taking it. This doctor always scares me. (Now if I don't get my eyes checked I "could go blind". I do have an eye doctor and am checked every year.) I prefer to continue diet and exercise instead of Lipitor. Is this wise?

Brief Answer:
relax Notting to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I can understand your concern.
I read your quire and clearly understand your problem.
There is Notting to worry in my opinion there is no need to use Lipitor at your age.
how ever if there are any risk factors you may consider using it
the risk factors are
1. type 2 diabetes
2.history of smoking
3.on treatment with hypertension.
4.having a first degree relative with cardiac event like heart attack
5.any history of cardiac event in past five years for you.

Kindly let me know if you have any of them.
kindly send your lipid profile for further analysis
There is no risk of diabetes in people taking Lipitor (atrovastatin),but there is some risk as per Jupiter trial in people taking Crestor(rozuastatin)
relax
enjoy your life with good health
get back to me with above mentioned information

My new doctor said that I have an 18% chance of stroke or heart attack in the next ten years. That I am borderline type 2 diabetic. I have never smoked but been around those that have (father/mother). I am on a thyroid medicine and have not had cardiac problems in the past. I take a water pill, chlorthalidone, which is for swelling left leg. It does help.I had great stress at a job (which I retired from) and thought I was having heart pain but the test was negative. My grandfather had heart problems in his 80's. My mother just had high blood pressure.
My new doctor really scares me. I was given Lispinopril because my blood pressure was high one day. I became dizzy, lost appetite and was very tired. They took me off it and my blood pressure has been the same. Normal for me is 130/78. That's what it usually runs. I don't know about the lipid profile.

Brief Answer:
Need not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for providing such a clear history.

I am very much confused with your doctors opinion. As per her 18% of cardiac risk is clear over estimation of it.

The most latest risk calculator proposed by the American heart association can not calculate risk of people more than 65 yrs.

With out any coronary event there is no role for anti platelet or statin therapy.

The most funny part is how can your doctor give you cholesterol medicine with out explaining the cholesterol report to you.

Any way relax, nothing to worry about. Continue your active life style with good diet and exercise...... they will help you more than statin and any other drugs.

regards,

Thank you so much! I feel better. I was so worried.
My doctor is an internist/pediatric doctor. She doesn't seem to remember me
or what my concerns are when I have an appointment with her. I was
asked what my sugar levels were...I did not know because I've never checked my sugar! I was never told to check it. She is a good doctor but I think she's not the one for me.
