Is MRSA Infection Fatal?
Question: I just did a nose swab and tested positive for MRSA, a resistant bacteria. Is this serious? I am getter nag a back operations next week. Will this operations n need to be cancelled?

MRSA bacteria can be multidrug resistant in the majority of cases. This means that it is resistant to multiple bacteria from different drug families, recently there have been strains of this bacteria that have been susceptible/responsive to more drugs.
The swab should not just identify the bacteria but would normally list the drugs it was tested against in the lab, showing which ones it may possibly respond to.
Some persons may have the bacteria but not have an infection related to it, this means that the bacteria is living in/on some aspect of the body but not causing an active infection.
Currently one of the treatments used to get rid of nasal is mupirocin 2 to 3 times a day for 5 days.
Chlorhexidine washes are also used and sometimes oral antibiotics can be added to this.
A swab can be repeated a week later to check to see if it is gone
There is an increased risk of infection post surgery in persons with MRSA even if they do not have an active infection but once decontamination with washes and mupirocin is started, it is possible that they would do the surgery on time.
