Brief Answer:
Not a good drug for diverticulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs XXXXX,
Hope you are in good health.
Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is a urinary antibiotic that will be least helpful in gut infections.
I do not know the basis of this prescription (may be based on sensitivety??), but it is NOT AT ALL a drug used for systemic infections due to its very poor tissue penetration.
If you can not tolerate pencillin and cipro, you may use doxycyclene, a better gut specific drug.

hope this will be helpful to you.
