Question: Hi doctor, i did my blood tests again, and my results were brilliant. i visited a gyna and she said that i have underactive thyroid. she has put me on medication called Euthyrox 25 ug.

in addition, as a birth control she gave me the pill called Mercillon. She advised me to take the medication now in october from the first day of my cycle.

however i feel its too early, and thought i should take it in november.

i thought i should get a second opinion from you before taking the pill that if it is a good pill. also there is blood cloth history in my family.
i dont want to have effects later
what would u advice

Brief Answer:
Start pills from October only

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXX,
thats so nice of you.

Yes you are in safe hands and thus take the tablets as advised.
And in my opinion you should start in October only because at times patient's body takes time to adapt to pills and the minor side effects like nausea and insomnia.
So better start it now so that you get acquainted to it soon.

Can you please elaborate the family history as I'm not able to understand the problem mentioned by you?

Waiting for your response.
Regards
Dr Manisha

Basically, before the doctor gave me the pill she asked me if in the family we have a blood clothing history, being unaware i told her we didn't.. As with the pill you can get blood cloths if it runs in the genes.
however, after speaking to my parents they mentioned we do have a blood cloth problem in the family.

thats why i was scared on if i should take the pill or not.

Also one more thing doctor, I'm getting married on the 31st of December in saudi Arabia.. InshaaALLAH. The thing is that i don't want to be on periods while in saudi as we cannot pray then and its very auspicious for us to be clean. how can i make my cycle change with dates so that i get my period say on like 16-17 december so i don't get it end of the month. Also in regards to my wedding only being at the end of the year would it still be advised to take the pill from now in october?

because in november will be one cycle and then december before the wedding will be two cycles so i thought it would be very early. please advice after having read the above.

Also, have you heard about this pill mercillon? is it good/

Brief Answer:
Good pills

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, yes mercillon is a very good formulation and commonly prescribed as it has very low dose estrogen viz just 20 ug so you can very well take it.
Yes you can start in November then but please first tell me the date of your expected periods so that I can advise you about the 31st December period free interval.
When are you guys returning from your honeymoon?
As regards clotting problem I'm still not sure what problem runs in your family as it can be excess of clotting (pills not indicated) or a problem of less clotting and thus excess of bleeding even in trivial wounds.
So if possible please elaborate more on clotting disorder.
Waiting for your response.
Take care.

Ok basically, I'm due anytime now to get my periods, but my cycle has changed. i used to get them every 23-24 days now i get them on the 27-28th day. So il just wait until when i get period now in october. So then we can count approx 27-28 days from the first date.

i don't mind getting periods anytime from 10 january to 22 janaury as we will go for honeymoon on 22nd XXXXXXX and return on 16 feb inshaaAllah.

So basically if we can make the cycle be around mid of every month that would be good.

Thank you.

kind regards

Brief Answer:
Plan explained

Detailed Answer:
In case your cycle is due now then there are chances of having periods at the time of wedding so best will be to start in November when you will have periods in first week of the month.
And then take the pill pack for 21 days and then instead of stopping the pills take another pill pack and take it for 7 days and then stop it so take pills for a total of 31 days and then you will get periods around 13-14 December.
Then start new pill pack again on first day of periods and take it for 21 days and on leaving the drug you will get periods around 5-6th January and serving the whole purpose properly.
Discuss this whole thing with your gynaecologist if you want and try to be compliant and don't miss the drug any day and be particular about time also.
Take care

Hi doctor, i started my periods today, which was the 25th day in the cycle. So should i start the pills this month or better advised for next month?

however i don't want to get periods on the 5-6 of january because i will be in saudi arabia i want to get them mid of month.

so like mid dec or even 20-22 december is okay, then mid january, mid feb.. so on.

how will that work?
Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
Start pill pack from today

Detailed Answer:
Okay then that's a good thing. You start your pill pack today and on leaving it on 30th October (After 21 days) you will get periods around 2-3rd November and then start again on day 1 of periods again you will get periods on 27-28th November and then start again on day 1 of periods and periods will be around 22-23 December so all will be within the time frame and no disruption at all.
And then next period in mid January as you wanted. So I guess you should start now itself so that there is no disruption of this delicate balance.
All the best.

ok basically, i have the merciless tablets with me at the back of the pack it says where to start the tablets and on the 22nd tablet it starts the inactive tablet which is smaller. So even if i don't get my period when i finish 21 tablets i just carry on taking the inactive tablets till the pack has finished, then when the pack has finished i start again another pack?

there are 7 inactive tablets but what if my periods finish earlier or later i she just carry on to the next pack of tablets?

i forgot the doctors explanation so thought i should re-confirm

Brief Answer:
Plan advised

Detailed Answer:
The 22nd pill is inactive pill and and if while taking the inactive pills you start your periods and throw away the rest of pack and start a new pill pack.
This plan is just for you otherwise usually people are asked to start new pill pack after completion of inactive pills irrespective of onset of periods.
But both the plans are fine and will not harm contraception benefits or cycle regularity.

ok so basically, once i start my periods in november, i throw away this pack and i start a new pack in november from the first pill again?

oK THANK you doctor.
And more thing, my mom doesn't like the fact that I'm going to start taking pills now in October, she was telling me to start in nov, but if i start in November my whole cycle will be messed up right?
Like there is no way i can start in November? Its better to start now/ She just worried because she thinks il take it longer like its early to start and all and she doesn't want me to have any future problems

And she was asking that these merciless tablets don't cause any harm in the future like infertility or anything?

I'm sorry for all the confusion. Thank you for your patience

And where are you based? in mumbai? if i come to XXXXXXX il surely come and visit you.
Thank you for all your help.

Brief Answer:
New plan advised

Detailed Answer:
Thank you dear you are most welcome to XXXXXXX but I stay in XXXXXXX so won't be able to meet you. But my good wishes and guidance is just a click away anytime on this forum and may god bless you both in all possible ways.
In case she wants you to start in November then wait till your periods in November which will cone around 5-6th of November and then start pills from first day of periods so you will finish around 26-27 of Nov and periods around 1st of December then start a new pill pack which will finish around 22nd December but then instead of starting the inactive pills start a new pill pack and take it daily as before till 30th December or 1st January and you will get periods around 5-6th if January as you wanted.
But the decision of stopping pills in December will rely on the number of days it took your periods to come in November after stopping the pill pack.
Best will be to take it till 1st of January but I'm afraid you will forget that in the middle of all the ceremonies so better ask your mother and a few friends or sisters to remind you of pill.
I hope everything is clear but in case you have any questions about it, I will be glad to answer.
Enjoy your life to the fullest.

Oh nice, if i come to XXXXXXX i will surely come to visit u.
Mom was asking that she read an article on taking pills and it causes blood cloths which lead to cancer.
Also, she read soemwhere that birth control pills taking it for too long can cause ovaries to shrink which can lead to infertility in the long term.

i thought let me ask you.

And i guess it will be better to take the pills from today because it will get complicated in november i guess. Like i dontwant to be on periods on 5-6 january as we will be in Saudi Arabia inshaaAllah.

thank u for ur immediate replies

Brief Answer:
Not seen in short term use

Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome dear, I understand your urgent need of the decision and of course your stage of life.
Yes your mom is right as birth control pills do cause all these things though in very less percentage of patients but still they do so.
But these bad effects are seen only if pills are used for more than 3-5 years and there are a lot of studies in support of this fact so since you plan to use it only for the time being and definitely going to plan family soon so I find this a safe option for you.
Just keep taking the pills daily without miss or delay with a variation of time of less than 3 hours and take a lot of water daily.
I'm happy that you have taken a right decision and try to sleep well and have a good diet as you have a hectic schedule ahead of you.
Take care dear.

In regards to taking the pill now or in November, i am due my next period around 3-4 November. So basically, if i start taking the pill then, i don't know how it will work.

My main concern is that i don't want to be on periods from the 28th of december to the 10th of january. Between this time frame.

So Doctor, if you are able to do the best calculation for me and tell me if i take now in october or november. Like if i can take in november without a problem id prefer that, but if taking in october makes life easier il do that.

So if you can work around the dates mentioned above and let me know. Thank you.
Its only 6pm here in Malawi, so i still have time to take the pill, but il await your response.
Thank you
sorry for the inconvenience caused

Brief Answer:
New customized plan explained

Detailed Answer:
It is a delight to serve patients like you who are genuinely grateful and yes I do get payment from this site.
Then to customize your situation just start from day 5 of periods in November which will be around 9-10th November and then take till 30th of November and then you will get periods on 1st December and then start from day 1 of periods and stop the pill pack after completion of 18 pills and on stopping on 18-19th of December you will get periods by 24th and thus will be free by 28th. So all purposes solved.
In case your periods in November come a little late than 10th November then in November also take 18 pills only and then start new pill pack by 1st December.
I really wish you all the happiness and goodness in life ahead.
Take care

Ok thank you doctor for the great explanation it really helped. Makes more sense. If there is anything to ask you in November then i will get back to you on this site forum. And yeah i thought i should ask you about payment because this is your job, i can't be getting it for free like i wouldn't feel right as this is your time and effort replying to my queries. Which i am very appreciative about. Thank you.
So if i take the pills from the 5th day or first day it doesn't make a difference right? like it works as the same purpose/?

Thank you and i wish u all the success in your career.

Brief Answer:
Yes works the same way

Detailed Answer:
Thank you so much dear, it indeed is a great pleasure replying to you as per the best of my knowledge.
Yes it makes no difference in contraceptive benefits or cycle regularity and works the same way, thus a commonly employed method of cycle modulation and since you have good regular periods so it becomes a simple mathematical calculation only.
All the best.
