Is Mycept Advisable While Breastfeeding?
Question: I'm diagnosed for NMO, adviced to have mycept 500mg, I'm breastfeeding for 7months baby, will it affect baby or safe to have medicine while breastfeeding. Plz suggest.
Brief Answer:
Could be excreted in breast milk
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Studies in rats treated with mycophenolate have shown mycophenolic acid to be excreted in milk. It is not known whether Mycept (mycophenolate mofetil) is excreted in the human breast milk. Because of the potential serious adverse reactions of mycophenolate in nursing infants, lactating mother should discontinue taking Mycept or should switch to suitable alternatives.
Please discuss with your treating physican since it may affect the baby. A decision should be made to discontinue the drug or discontinue nursing while on treatment or within 6 weeks after stopping therapy.
Regards
