Is PSA Level In Blood Of 4.3 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: Hello, I have been seeing a urologist for BPH for the past 5 years. My most recent urologist visit my PSA was 4.3. My urologist did not see an urgency for a biopsy and the DRE was ok. My urologist wants me to come in for a checkup/PSA bloodwork now every 6 months and my next appointment is in December. I would like to start finasteride for
hair loss. Do you see this being a problem being my latest PSA was 4.3 and obviously my doctor wants to monitor every 6 months.

Brief Answer:
Taking Fenesteride will give false reading of PSA .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Your recent PSA is 4.3 which is slighly higher than normal higher range of 4 .

Normally we do monitor PSA reading done at frequent interval of every six months and take a call for doing prostate biopsy only in a situation when it shows rising trend and not otherwise.

Your Urologist has rightly advised you for doing serum PSA after six months and take a call going for biopsy after six months ..

Taking Fenesteride does cause decrease in PSA levels and may give false reading of PSA and creates problem in diagnosis of cancer of the prostate Hence I would suggest you not to take Fenesteride for onother six months or a year..

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.
