Is PSA Level Of 13.5 A Cause For Concern?
Question: I am a 61 year old male, no history of cancer in family. I recently had a six month check up and my PSA was 13.5up from 2.5 just six months ago. I have been taking flowmax for BHP for the last year and a half.
The day I went to the doctor, I had had a more difficult time passing urine. I ran a100.5 temp that night into the following day.
I was curious if the PSA spike was due to some type urinary infection (other than cancer)
I've also, in the recent past , had a detached retinal
Surgery as well as a large surgical cyst removal.
I've got a appointment with a urologist soon and am really worried about it being cancer. I'm taking several eye drops for ongoing problems with internal eye pressure also.
What's your opinion?

Brief Answer:
There are false positive rise in PSA.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can understand your concern.
Rise in PSA is not always due to cancer.
There're many other conditions, where PSA is seen to be elevated.
You're right in that, infection is a known cause for PSA to rise.
So you should wait for about a month and then repeat the PSA.
The next one may very well be normal.
Wish you well.
