Is PSA Test Advisable For An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Jan 2016
Question: Hi - At what age do Dr's normally suggest a PSA test. I have had a couple suggest to do now (age 44) yet on the web it seems to be at 50. Is it just down to each Dr's preference?

Brief Answer:
There is no fix criteria about the age to do PSA test

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have been advised to PSA test by your Dr.

PSA test is generally advised after the age of 50 years which is the age when incidences of cancer of the Prostate are on rise .However the decision regarding need for doing PSA test is taken by a concerned Urologist on clinical symptoms and presence of hard nodule on prostate palpable on Digital Rectal Examination .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

but he did the DRE and said the prostrate was normal. He also said that there was no rush for the PSA and I should do it over the coming months?
