Is PSA Value Of 5.8 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Aug 2016
Question: I just had my annual physical. I'm 51 years old. Last year my PSA was 3.4 with normal DRE. This year PSA was 5.8 with normal DRE buy full sized prostate. Urologist had me have a 4K test. Results came back with a 98% clean reading. I had a biopsy 6 years duexperience to elevated PSA caused by a Stag horn kidney stone infection. My Urologist is saying all appears good and to come back in 6 months for another PSA and DRE .

Thoughts?

Brief Answer:
A minimal elevation of PSA, needs to be repeated in 4 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your concern.

You have nothing to be alarmed about.
It would've been better,if you could've attached the 4K reports.

A PSA level up to 4 is normal.
So 5.8 is borderline elevated.

Then next important test is the clinical test of DRE or rectal examination of prostate.
If that's normal, done by an Urologist, just repeat PSA test in 4 weeks.

The PSA can be elevated up to 10,with inflammation or infection,DRE,large prostate gland, etc.
As you had a staghorn calculus earlier,an infection or prostatitis is a possibility.
So you've to do the following tests :

1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,RBS,creatinine,and LFT.
3. A TRUS - trans rectal ultrasound of the prostate gland.
4. Repeat the PSA after 4-6 weeks.

As you've not sent the 4K test reports, send all reports along with these.
According to the reports,i can give you an expert opinion.
Hope your anxiety has reduced by now.
Wish you well.
