Is Penicillin Effective In Managing Latent Syphilis
Question: I have syphills. It's in latent stages. I've been treated about 7 months ago but it has only gone done 1 fold. It should've gone down 4 the doctor is retreating me again with penicillin. I have muscle achest and joint pain. Neck also. I've started to notice muscle spams. The doctor says it could be arthritis also. I'm starting to get concerned should I get a second opinion. To make sure I don't have neurosyphilis or is there not much I can do at this point. Just wait to see what happens. Also how long does the symptoms go away If the penicillin works.
Brief Answer:
Adequate treatment ensures cure, not to bother about titer.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
You had been treated for latent syphilis 7 months ago.
But you had not mentioned about the exact treatment what you had. Still drugs other than Penicillin in the management of Syphilis are considered inferior. Moreover We come across cases of syphilis with persistent titers even after adequate treatment especially with late syphilis.
Another thing is the serological titers in late syphilis would take an year or more to have 4 fold fall in titer.
If have the adequate treatment, not to bother about the persistent titer. Your cure is assured. Nothing to worry.
